Kill game is a common variant of poker, mostly played in the fixed-limit community card games like Kill Game Poker and Omaha Hi/Lo or Omaha 8 limit poker games in either a Half Kill or Full Kill variety. The Kill game activates when a player wins two pots subsequently in Kill Game Poker or a player scoops both high and low hands in Omaha Hi/Loor Omaha 8 poker. The pot-winning player (called the “Killer”) posts a Kill blind, which is twice the size of standard blind bet, no matter where he is sitting at the table. For example, if you were playing $4-$8 and you were the Killer, you'd post a blind of $8 instead of $4, and the game would be played at the $8-$ 16 limit.
If a player other than the kill blind has won this pot, or the pot is not big enough to activate a kill, the next game reverts to the original game limit.
Kill Game in Kill Game Poker
In Kill Game Poker, the Kill game is a two step process. First, a player have to win the full pot and that pot must be enough big to qualify. Usually, this amount is 5 times the size of the blind, before the rack. For example, if you are playing a $5-$10 game, then the pot size must be 25 dollars or greater. The player, who wins this pot, gets the Kill button which mostly bears the words “partial kill” on one side and the “kill pot” on the other.
When you first obtain the button, its partial kill side is turned upwards. If the player having the partial kill button wins the next pot and that pot is of qualifying size, the next pot will be a kill pot. Now the player must turn over the kill button and the betting sizes are doubled. Continuing the above example, the betting will now be $10-$20. The blinds will be posted normally, but the player having the kill button must post a $10 blind. If the Kill Button is in either the small or big blind, they must post the Kill Blind, instead of their normal blind. Now the betting action proceeds as usual, except the first player to act after the big blind must either call $10 (not the $5 blind) raise to $10, or fold.
If the player having the kill button wins this pot, the kill game will remain in effect, and the betting will still be double. This continues until a different player wins the pot.
Kill Game in Omaha Poker Hi/Lo or Omaha 8 Poker
In Omaha Hi/Lo or Omaha/8 poker, the kill game is somewhat different. Here, the player doesn’t have to win two pots in a row. Instead, if a player scoops the entire pot (winning both high and low hands) and the pot size is big enough (usually 10 times the big blind), then the kill game activates for the next hand. The same rules apply as with Kill Game Poker. If the player keeps on to scoop pots, the Kill game will continue until he fails to scoop. |
