How to Play 5 Card Stud Poker
The game of 5 card stud poker can be played between 2-10 players. In 5 card stud poker, 1 hole card and 4 faced-up cards are dealt to all the players.
Ante and Bring-in – 1 Hole Card and 1 Faced-up Card is Dealt - First Betting Round.
Before the game begins, all the players place a compulsory ante which is usually 1/5 of the bring-in, but differs from the game to game. Next, 1 faced-up card and 1 hole card is dealt to all the players. The player with the lowest faced-up card will place the forced bring-in bet.
If there is a tie for the lowest faced-up card, the forced bring-in bet will be decided by the rank of the rank of the cards. Below are the card ranks from highest to the lowest order: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs. The player who is forced to make the bring-in bet have to betting options: either to bet half of lower limit of the betting structure or completing to the full lower limit of the betting structure. For example, if you are playing $10-20 five card Stud, you can either bet $5 or $10.
When the bring-in has made his/her bet, the first betting round starts from the player sitting immediately left to the dealer and other players have the four betting options: Fold, Call, Raise/Completing.
The amount that players can raise is determined by the forced bring-in bet amount. If the forced bring-in is just the half of the lower limit of the betting structure, the raiser may simply complete the bet. When the bet has been made, all the following raises must be equal to the lower limit of the betting structure. For example, if you are playing $10-20 five card stud poker game and the forced bring-in bet is $5, the raise can make it $10. But if the forced bring-in bet is of $10, then raiser can only raise another $10, thus making it $20. As a rule, the betting is capped at one bet and three raises.
Second Faced-Up Card is Dealt – Second betting Round
After the second betting round, second faced-up card is dealt to all the players. The betting action starts from the player having the highest pair of up cards, if there is no pair of up-cards, then the player having the highest two up-cards is first to act with the two betting options. Either Bet or Check. If he/she bets, then the player sitting next to him/her may call, fold or raise. If the player checks, then the player sitting next to him/her can bet or check too. The betting action continues until all the players check or all the bets are equal.
Third Faced-Up Card is Dealt - Third Betting Round
When the second betting round is completed, third faced-up card is dealt to all the players. The third betting round starts from the player having the highest up-card hand. This player has two betting options: Either Bet or Check. Now the betting action continues exactly like the second betting round.
Fourth and Final Faced-Up Card is Dealt – Fourth Betting Round
After the third betting round, the fourth and final faced-up card is dealt to all the players, followed by the fourth betting round. The player having the highest up-cards hand is first to act. Now the betting action continues exactly like the previous betting round.
Note: In the fourth betting of 5 card stud poker, the betting size changes to the higher limit of the betting structure. For example, if you are playing $10-20 five card stud poker game, you have to bet $ 20 and all the raises will be of $20.
Showdown Time – When the fourth betting round is completed, the showdown starts. The last bettor or raiser has the option of showing his hand first or folding his hand. Now all the active players have the same option. The pot is awarded to the player having the best five-card poker hand. Thus, in 5 card stud poker, all the five cards are used at the showdown.
